We're a research group called Data Science Lab (short: dlab), and we're part of the computer science department of EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. As our names says, our business is data, specifically distilling large, often messy datasets into valuable insights.
For the shirt, it would be nice to play with the similarity of "data" with "Dada" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dada), an important, absurd European art movement from the early 20th century. In particular, it would be cool if the following quote could be incorporated into the design, but with "Dada" replaced by "data":
"Dada doubts everything. Dada is an armadillo. Everything is Dada, too. Beware of Dada. Anti-dadaism is a disease: selfkleptomania, man's normal condition, is Dada. But the real dada's are against Dada."
(by Tristan Tzara, cf. https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Dada)
The color of both EPFL and of our lab is red. The EPFL logo is available here: https://mediacom.epfl.ch/logo . The dlab logo is attached. That said, while red is obvious, it doesn't have to be the main color.
If we're going with the "Dada/data" thing, it would be good if the design could be in the spirit of dada, a bit crazy and absurd, but at the same time tied to what we work with every day: data, algorithms, code, etc.
One idea would be to take inspiration from Dada's typical collage style:
The T shirt is not so much for an official occasion, but should be something that our students (all in their twenties to mid thirties) will like to wear casually.
